The Approbation itself costs €130–€600 depending on the state. The real cost — sworn translations, legalization, language courses, the FSP and Kenntnisprüfung fees, the §16d visa — lands between roughly €4,400 and €9,200. What you actually pay for
Seven cost lines. Two are official fees; five are estimates you control.
Approbation fee — €130–€600 by state. The lowest is Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; the highest is Hamburg.
FSP exam fee — €350–€700. Nordrhein is cheapest at €350; M-V and Schleswig-Holstein charge €700.
Kenntnisprüfung fee— €400–€600 if you're routed to it. From 1 November 2026 this is the default for non-EU applicants.
Sworn translations — €400–€800 for a full document set, by a Germany-based court-sworn translator.
Document legalization — apostille (~€20–50/doc) or embassy legalization (~€30–80/doc), depending on your country.
Language courses — €0 to €6,000 depending on where you start. A1 → B2 intensive courses are the single biggest variable.
§16d recognition visa — €75 federal fee (non-EU applicants only).
